Types of Abuse
Many people think that abuse is just physical, like when someone is punched or hit. But abuse is much more than that!
There are many types of abuse. Remember, anything that makes someone scared or is used to control them is a type of abuse.
Let's go down the list and finish up with physical abuse so you can see just how many types of abuse there are!
Emotional Abuse
Emotional abuse can be any of these:
-
Insults, name calling, belittling, constant criticisms
-
Mocking the victim, humiliating them
-
Mind games, manipulation, making the person feel worthless

Social Isolation
Social Isolation can be:
-
Trying to stop the someone from seeing or talking to family and/or friends
-

-
Jealously – taking away someone's car and access to transport.
Sexualised Abuse

Sexualised Abuse is the need for someone to feel power and in control of their victim. It is not about sexual gratification. It is when some touches your private parts and makes you do something you don't want to do. This is not what adults or other children should be doing. If someone tries to touch your private parts, make sure you tell a trusted adult.
If someone has ever touched your penis, testicles, vagina, anus, chest, breasts, &/or your mouth (your private parts) and told you to keep it a secret, you need to tell! You will not get into trouble because it is not your fault. Make sure you tell someone you trust.

Animal abuse is the wilful act or infliction of pain, harm or injury to an animal and may be used as a way of instilling fear and thus controlling the child’s actions.
These types of abuse can include:
-
threatening to harm a pet if the victim does not comply;
-
using control by demonstrating to the victim what they are capable of;
-
harming or injuring the pet as a way of causing emotional distress to the victim; and
-
isolation – to use the threat to the animal to isolate the victim from talking or reporting the abuse.
Physical Abuse
Physical abuse is any behaviour that is intended to cause harm, such as:
-
pushing, slapping, punching, choking, kicking
-

Abuse using Technologies

This includes using the websites, social media and phones to abuse someone. It can cover many types of abuse.
-
People can send pictures and videos of a sexual nature
-
People can send pictures and videos of others physically or verbally fighting
-
People can use the internet to stalk you
-
People can hack your social media accounts to embarrass you
All of these examples are how others try to control and have power over you by using technology.
People that send pictures or videos of a sexual nature are at risk of being charged with child pornography, even if you send a picture of yourself to others (this is never a good idea!)
In a recent report written in 2013, researchers found that "half of all sexually active high school students reported sending a sexually explicit nude or nearly nude photo or video of themselves, while 70% reported receiving such a photo or video" (Mitchell et. al, 2014).
